Celebs joined 24-hour freeze of Instagram
News - Sep 21, 2020
Kim Kardashian West, Katy Perry and Leonardo DiCaprio are only some of many celebrities who are participating in a 24-hour ‘freeze’ of Instagram.
According to them, this is a reaction to the failure of Facebook, as the parent company, to respond adequately to content expressing violence, hatred and misinformation about the election.
They support the latest campaign of the #StopHateforProfit coalition, the AP reports.
With 188 million followers, Kim Kardashian West is one of the strongest Instagram influencers, and her support and support of other celebs to the boycott resulted in a 1.3% drop of Facebook’s shares.
The coalition invites people to post a message highlighting what they call the damage caused by Facebook, as well as to refrain from Instagram posting for one day.
– I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation – created by groups to sow division and split America apart – posted Kim Kardashian West on Instagram yesterday.
Facebook refused to comment, but pointed to recent announcements about what it is doing in order to restrict influence of groups supporting violence and to intensify its efforts to protect the US election, scheduled for November.
